What do these groups mean?
Recent = the mapped capped cohort with actual Tests in 2025 or 2026. Earlier = eight capped programme or recall options without a Test in either year. Uncapped = the 27 usable options in the researched programme/consideration inventory.
Role counts overlap. A reported injury is a dated source-backed status; no injury claim is a statement about this record, rather than a medical declaration of fitness. Every player page links to its sources.
The breadth behind the starting pack
The mapped Springbok cohort contains six options at tighthead and 12 at lock, drawing on capped players with Test involvement in 2025 or 2026. The lock count includes primary locks and separately supported positional cover. It is a set of possible roles, not 12 independent selections available at once.
Across all positions, the main group contains 61 capped players. Eight earlier capped programme or recall options are displayed separately, alongside 27 uncapped programme or explicit-consideration options. Those groups have different admission rules. Keeping them distinct makes the numbers useful rather than merely large.
Versatility changes a depth chart
Thomas du Toit and Jan-Hendrik Wessels show why one shirt number cannot tell the whole story of a forward pool. Verified alternative roles can matter to bench construction and selection. But a reserve jersey by itself does not establish which role a player actually performed.
The map separates a player’s primary position from documented cover. Select a position, then switch cover on or off to see the effect. A versatile player can appear in more than one position view, while his individual page remains one national Test record. That prevents role counts from being mistaken for a larger population.
Experience is not current availability
Eben Etzebeth’s career record belongs in the experience picture. His reported availability at the edition’s cutoff belongs in another field. Neither should overwrite the other. A depth chart that silently removes injured players loses part of the national pool; one that presents every name as immediately available loses the matchweek reality.
The earlier capped group is also worth keeping visible. Frans Malherbe is outside the main recent-Test cohort in this edition, yet his established career does not disappear. The separate group makes the boundary explicit and prevents a reader from interpreting an absent main-grid name as a claim that a career has ended.
A pathway with its own evidence
The uncapped section contains 27 usable options from the researched programme and consideration inventory. It includes 24 with published official programme involvement and three supported explicit-consideration cases. Those are the boundaries of this edition, rather than a claim to list every talented uncapped South African.
Short senior careers and age-grade records need honest labels. A player does not need ten senior appearances to be interesting, and an incomplete senior history should not be padded with invented positional evidence. The reference pages retain the scope of the credentials behind each inclusion.
Depth and rotation can be read together
South Africa used 50 different Test players in the rotation comparison through 16 October, and averaged 8.9 starting-XV changes between Tests. Those figures describe actual involvement and selection changes. The depth map is broader and has a later verification date. It answers who is in the researched pool, not how often every person played.
Read the two views together without turning one into an explanation for the other. A broad pool can make several choices possible; the match sequence shows which choices were made. The effects on cohesion, performance and results require their own evidence.
