147 appearances. Three roles.
A Test career, precisely defined
Beauden Barrett’s record stands at 147 New Zealand Tests and 48 Test tries at our 17 October cutoff. His wider All Blacks match total uses a different boundary. Uncapped fixtures and club rugby do not enter these career figures.
The count combines the official pre-match selection record with confirmed participation in Sydney. His two tries in that match take the verified pre-Bledisloe total of 46 to 48. A profile page can lag a completed match; retaining that calculation makes the update inspectable.
Two roles and a long apprenticeship
His 147 appearances divide into 70 starts at first five-eighth, 33 at fullback and 44 from the bench. That is a career shape, not just a total. The early years contain substantial replacement experience before his starting responsibilities expanded.
An annual appearance count is also a count against opportunity. The All Blacks’ full calendar-year Test total includes matches played before his 2012 debut. A missing appearance cannot, on its own, tell us whether the cause was injury, rest or selection.
One evening in Auckland
Against Australia at Eden Park on 25 August 2018, Barrett scored four tries and five conversions: 30 of New Zealand’s 40 points. That is 75% of the team total in a 40–12 win.
The game is a striking peak, but a single performance cannot describe a 15-season Test career. The more revealing view puts it beside the accumulated starts, bench appearances and changes of role. The player page brings those measures together without combining club and country totals.
