The record and the update

Eben Etzebeth has 147 Springbok Test caps at our cutoff. He passed Victor Matfield’s former mark of 127 with his 128th appearance against Argentina in 2024. The current total is supported by the pre-match team sheet and completed-match participation record.

Some profile fields retain older totals. A biography paragraph and a dynamic statistical panel can disagree even on the same official site. Our figure follows the dated selection and completed match, with that source disagreement kept visible rather than silently averaged away.

Four milestones, one career

His debut came against England in 2012. He reached 50 caps against Australia in 2016, 100 against Wales in 2022, and the national record against Argentina in 2024. The century was also personal: his then-fiancée, Anlia van Rensburg, sang the anthem.

The milestones suggest continuity, but they are not a complete availability record. A timeline shows the occasions on which the total changed; it should not manufacture explanations for every gap between them.

The smallest margins

South Africa’s three 2023 World Cup knockout wins were each by one point: 29–28 against France, 16–15 against England and 12–11 against New Zealand. Etzebeth’s quarter-final try belongs within that team story. It is not evidence that one player alone delivered the title.

He was part of the 2019 and 2023 World Cup-winning squads and won SA Men’s Player of the Year in 2022 and 2023. Those national awards are distinct from World Rugby’s global awards. Keeping the names precise preserves what the achievement actually was.
