Selected documented national milestones. Calendar years and remaining days; not decimal years.

The same number, a different clock

Sam Whitelock reached 100 New Zealand caps eight years and 67 days after his debut. Agustín Creevy reached Argentina’s century after 18 years and 104 days. The destination is familiar. The journey is more than twice as long.

Elapsed time is a calendar measure between two dated appearances. It does not tell us how many matches a player missed through injury, how often their country played, or how selection changed. Those questions need their own evidence. A short route combines opportunity with repeated selection; a long one can contain several distinct careers.

Age and speed are separate stories

Michael Hooper reached his hundredth cap after eight years and 128 days, at 28 years and 348 days old. Creevy was 38 years and 143 days old. A young debut creates one kind of possibility; longevity creates another. Neither figure, by itself, ranks the quality of the player.

Our illustrated comparison includes Whitelock, Mils Muliaina, Hooper, Kieran Read and George Smith alongside Creevy. It is a set of documented journeys, not a claim that six players represent every route to the milestone.

What counts as a cap?

This edition identifies 103 documented country centurions across 14 countries. It keeps three additional Lions-only century cases and a historical claim outside that main cohort. National-union cap awards and strict statistical Test ledgers do not always use the same boundary. Combining them would give a tidy total with an untidy meaning.

Russia is outside this edition’s geographic coverage. That is a coverage choice, not a claim that its players’ historical caps have been rescinded. Where sources disagree about a reported hundredth appearance, the basis must stay attached to the record. We therefore publish individual, sourced journeys here and avoid a cross-cohort average that would hide those differences.
