The experience of champions
Measure the squad before the story ends
We compare the winning nation’s opening-day squad at each men’s Rugby World Cup from 1987 to 2023. Caps and ages are measured at the tournament opening, rather than after the final. Injury call-ups are kept separate. This avoids giving a champion credit, at the start, for experience it earned during the tournament.
The sample begins with New Zealand’s 26-player 1987 squad, averaging 6.5 national caps per player. It ends with South Africa’s 33 in 2023, averaging 41.5. Those figures sit in very different rugby calendars and squad-size rules. A simple rise across the years cannot be read as a controlled experiment.
Older is not the same as more capped
South Africa’s 2023 squad had the highest average age of these ten champions: 30.4 years. New Zealand’s 2015 winners had the highest average national-cap count: 47.9. Different teams lead the two measures. Age measures time alive; caps measure a particular kind of opportunity and selection.
The 2023 Springboks also included 11 players at their first World Cup. A mature squad can still contain tournament newcomers. National appearances, previous World Cup experience and previous titles describe different things and should remain separate.
The missing comparison
These are winners. We have not put every unsuccessful squad alongside them, so these charts cannot identify an optimal age or show that adding caps causes victory. They describe the range of successful squads. A winning formula would need a much broader comparison.
The most useful next question is how experience is distributed. A small group of veterans can lift an average while several positions remain young. The opening-day figures preserve that context and make a better starting point than treating “experienced” as one uniform property.
