How close is close?
ALL TEN FINALS · 1987–2023South Africa 12–11 New Zealand · 2023
The smallest margins
South Africa beat New Zealand 15–12 after extra time in 1995. England beat Australia 20–17 after extra time in 2003. New Zealand beat France 8–7 in 2011, and South Africa beat New Zealand 12–11 in 2023. Those four matches form the group decided by no more than three points.
The comparison covers all ten men’s World Cup finals from 1987 to 2023. It includes the final result after any extra time. A regulation-time draw and the eventual winning margin are different observations, so extra time remains labelled on the two affected finals.
A point is not a full explanation
A one-point margin makes the final moments easy to remember. It does not tell us that the entire game was evenly balanced, that each team had the same opportunities, or that a different decision would certainly have changed the winner. Those claims need the sequence and the match context.
The title “one kick apart” describes the scale of the result, not a promise that one hypothetical kick was available or would have succeeded. The chart shows actual points and actual margins. It leaves imagined alternatives outside the record.
The other finals matter too
The smallest gaps can dominate our memory, but six finals finished more than three points apart. Australia’s 35–12 win over France in 1999 has the largest final margin in this ten-match set: 23 points. New Zealand’s 29–9 win in 1987 and South Africa’s 32–12 win in 2019 were both decided by 20.
The full timeline keeps those outcomes beside the close finishes. A filter containing only nail-biters would be a compelling viewing list, but it would no longer describe the distribution of all the finals. Move the threshold control to see which results enter or leave the highlighted group.
Sort by year or by margin
The chronological view shows the sequence of finals. Sorting by margin answers a different question: which were closest? Neither ordering needs to pretend that a smaller margin means a better or more important match.
Selecting a final keeps the winner, opponent, complete score and extra-time status together. That is more informative than a detached number such as “+1”, which can be mistaken for a try count or a player contribution when its unit is not immediate.
A final is one match
The result of a final does not summarise every obstacle the champion overcame. South Africa’s 2023 knockout sequence, for example, also contained one-point wins in the quarter-final and semi-final. The final belongs inside that campaign, while remaining one clearly defined match in this chart.
